Imphal, July 09 2018:
Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) scientist Khumanthem Tomba has said that MPCB has seized around 9276 kilograms of polythene carry bags (with less than 50 microns thickness) till date.
He made the statement during a drive against polythene bags in and around Thangal Keithel and Paona Keithel area today.
Speaking to media persons, Tomba informed that MPCB began its drive against polythene bag with less than 50 micron thickness following the 5th World Environment Day which was celebrated last month.
Till date, around 9278 kgs of polythene bags have been seized by MPCB and the State Government has plans to either recycle the said materials or use them for road construction.
As a part of the said plan, the seized plastics will be handed over to M/S Devchand Plastic Industries at Patsoi although an MoU between the firm and PWD is still yet to be signed.
He urged the people to use plastic bags whose thickness are above 50 microns or to use other bio degradable materials instead of such polythene bags.
In some States, polythene bags with thickness below 70 microns have even been banned, he said and added that thin plastics are really cheap and as such people often throw them away which lead to serious impact on the environment.
