Imphal, December 02 2017:
For the first time in the State, Double Renal Angioplasty was successfully performed at SKY Hospital on November 14.According to a press release from SKY Hospital & Research Centre Pvt Ltd, the specialised procedure was conducted on a 43 years old male patient from Langjing, Imphal West, who was referred from another hospital with chest pain and hypertension.
His contrast renal angiogram revealed an unusual renal blood supply, Normally one renal (kidney) artery originating from abdominal aorta supplies each kidney (right & left).
In his case, two renal arteries supply each kidney, it said .
The two renal arteries supplying the right kidney were perfectly normal while both renal arteries supplying the left kidney were tightly obstructed at origin from the abdominal aorta.
First the obstruction was carefully threaded with a metal guide wire then smaller balloons were passed across the obstructed segments which were dilated, it elaborated .
One high quality stent (Drug Eluting Stent) was implanted in each left upper and lower renal arteries.
Normal blood flow was restored after the stents implantation which is called "TIMI – III Flow".
If the renal artery obstructions were not relieved with stents implantation, the kidney (left) would have been damaged permanently.
The renal artery obstruction is likely the cause of his hypertension.
In which case he can gradually come off lifelong drug treatment for his hypertension, the release said .
Dr L Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist & Chairman, SKY Hospital stated that high BP detected at young age should be thoroughly investigated to find out such abnormality for correction of which may permanently cure someone's hypertension without need of lifelong drug treatment .
He explained that bilateral double renal artery is a rare variation which is present in 1 to 11.6 percent of human bodies in various studies in life or in cadavers.
Renal angiogram should therefore be performed for all patients undergoing nephrectomy (surgical removal of kidney) or before donating a kidney to avoid vascular complication during the operation, he added.
