Imphal, February 02 2015:
Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) has lauded the decision of Ringui Village of Ukhrul District, Manipur to include women in local governance.
In a press note, TYCM Secretary Lh Decemhring said that Tangkhul society is known for its democratic and participatory approach in bringing about a just and equitable society regardless of sex from time immemorial.
However, due to certain customs, so far, women have been prevented from participating in local governance led by apex organisations and village authorities, said the TYCM Secretary.
It is for the first time in Tangkhul history that Ringui Village took a positive step in promoting a democratic and participatory system by inducting women in its Village Authority whose members are elected for grassroots level local governance.
Terming the development as a "milestone", Lh Decemhring said the achievement was all the people who believe in democratic system of governance and gender equality.
The village authorities in the Hill Districts of Manipur are self-governing institutions that stand for a decentralized and participatory governance like Panchayats and Municipalities that has made women's representation in local level decision-making a reality which had been guaranteed by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.
TYCM said it believed that the decision of Ringui village Authorities will pave the way for all the Hill Villages to follow the set path.
