Imphal, July 27 2021:
All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) welcomed Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on her way to home from Imphal airport on Tuesday.
According to a statement of AMUCO issued by its assistant general secretary MM Thambou, large number of its volunteers lined up along Tiddim road in front of its office at Kwakeithel and honoured the Olympian and presented her bouquets, flower rings and traditional shawl (Lengyanphi).
The stupendous performance by Mirabai in the biggest sporting event of the world not only brought smiles to entire people of the country but the silver medal she bagged at the Tokyo games also made people of Manipur elated as they have been suffering for more than one and half years due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Amidst the COVID-19 induced curfew, many volunteers of AMUCO came out and welcomed Mirabai for a short duration and this indeed reduced people's eagerness to welcome her personally and AMUCO did it in the interest of the people of the state.
Though AMUCO works mainly on safeguarding unity and integrity of Manipur, the organisation has been giving special attention to promotion of sportspersons and accordingly organised sports events every year including indigenous games.
It is said that no one could make repayment for their parents and motherland but Mirabai Chanu has made entire people of Manipur and India proud by bagging silver medal in Tokyo Olympics thereby enabling her to make repayment for her parents and motherland to at least 90 percent, the AMUCO statement said, adding that congratulatory messages through telephone made personally by chief minister N Biren Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi moments after Mirabai bagged Silver medal were priceless.
AMUCO also prayed that the happiness brought to the people of Manipur by Mirabai be enhanced when ace boxer Mary Kom wins another medal in Tokyo Olympics.
It also prayed that players of the state lessen suffering of the people at least to some extent during the pandemic.
