Imphal, August 26 2013:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam today announced that the National Food Security Ordinance would be introduced in the State very soon.
He was speaking at a Lok Sabha Youth Convention cum mass enrollment programme held at Konthoujam Makha Leikai Ibudou Pakhangba community hall.
He claimed that necessary preparations for translating the National Food Security Ordinance into action are almost complete.
Congress-led UPA II Government has already started implementing the National Food Security Ordinance in line with its promise made to the people of the country through its election manifesto published before the last Lok Sabha election to eliminate poverty and hunger from India.
Although the National Food Security Bill has been implemented in the form of an ordinance, the Bill would be tabled in the Parliament.
Once the Bill is passed as an Act, there would be no more deaths in the country due to poverty.
Youth Congress should take the leading role in informing the mass about the food security ordinance and take the message "people should get enough food grains according to their needs without fail" to every nook and corner of the State, he said.
The UPA Government has already ensured right to work to people in rural areas by introducing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and it was driven by the Congress party's concern for poverty alleviation in rural areas.
However, many schemes taken up for people's welfare could not deliver their purposes because people are not aware of these schemes.
Gaikhangam called upon the gathering to learn about the many flagship programmes launched by the Congress Government and obtain their due shares and benefits.
If people are denied their due shares, the concerned officials should get befitting punishment.
Hitting at opposition parties, the Deputy Chief Minister asserted that opposition parties could not last even a single term in power.
On the contrary, the Congress party has been running a stable Government for the past many years and during these years the party has succeeded in bringing about lots of developmental changes in the State.
The programme was also attended by many other Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, party functionaries and Dr S Ranjan, Congress candidate in Konthoujam AC in the last Assembly election.
