SCERT striving to achieve overall improvement in Education, says Dr M Meenakumari

The Directorate of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Government of Manipur has been providing academic resource support to the Directorate of School Education, SSA, RMSA, ADCs, Board of Secondary Education Manipur, so as to achieve overall improvement in the quality of school education through various programmes stated Dr M Meenakumari Devi, Director, SCERT.
She was speaking at a press conference organized by DIPR at its office complex at Moirangkhom as part of the series of press conferences held to highlight the development activities of the various department of the Government of Manipur.
The academic support of SCERT is made available through various training and orientation programmes.
The SCERT has been providing teaching-learning materials/modules to teachers and students and undertaking action research and research studies on issues related to school education in the State.
The Directorate of SCERT provides strict guidance and guidelines towards effective functioning of 9 (nine) DIETs in Manipur.
Besides undertaking research projects, action research and other innovative practices on various areas, SCERT was also entrusted as State Academic Authority under the RTE Act for framing of curriculum/syllabus and evaluation procedure at elementary stage of School Education, said officials during the conference.
For over two decades the Directorate has been contributing significantly in the area of teacher education by offering different courses of training- both short and long term to the in-service as well as pre-service teachers.
SCERT also takes priority in development of curriculum materials, supplementary materials, revision of DElEd and DElEd (Hindi) curriculums and syllabuses in conformity with the NCTE Regulation 2014 and National Curriculum Framework Teacher Education (NCFTE) 2009 and School Education Curriculum for Classes I to VIII under the RTE Act, 2009.Materials such as scripts for Educational audio and visual programmes are also developed and produced, said officials.
The State Govt entrusted to SCERT to tie up with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) as a measure to fulfil the mandate of the RTE Act.
Currently, 25,407 teachers have registered to NIOS for DElEd course.
Under School Leadership Academy, one month course training will be held specially for Principal and Headmaster and its likely to commence in the first week of May this year, said one of the officials.
Central sponsored schemes are also taken up in the form of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).
The main objective of the scheme is to provide support to schools through teacher training, development and extension services.
Emphasising on the issues of educating minority and weaker section of the society, the officials said that the Block Institutes of Teachers Education (BITE) is to provide quality education to the weaker sections of society particularly in SC/ST/Minority concentrated districts.
National Population Education Project (NPEP) has been implemented in the State with Financial support from SCERT, said officials emphasising the need of the subject to bring about sustainable development.
The SCERT has two practising schools, one at Jr High School at Kakching (class I-VIII) and another at Canchipur, Imphal having class I-V.During the year 2017-18, 369 pre-service trainees were trained in the two year Diploma in Elementary Education Course by 8 DIETs.
So far, a total of 1878 pre-service trainees have passed out from the DIET Centres across the State.
The SCERT has following constituent units: Teacher Training and Extension Services Unit, Education Technology Unit, Educational Research and Survey Unit, Evaluation & Examination Reform Unit, Information Technology Unit, Population Education Unit, Science and Mathematics Unit, Guidance and Counselling Unit, Library and Documentation Services and Publication Unit.
The SCERT has received a number of awards in the All India Children Educational Audio Video Festival and ICT Mela organised by CIET, NCERT, New Delhi.
In 2018, Taramanga Suba Chahi Chagi Puwari (audio programme) won the Best Editing (Audio), Ahongba Sinmi (Cheap Worker) an audio programme won the Best Audio Programme (Teachers) and The Head Teacher (video programme) won Best Video Programme (Teachers) respectively.
