Imphal, April 17 2012:
In a noble effort towards integration and rehabilitation of physically challenged persons, the state government would be giving marriage incentives to people who get into wedlock with physically challenged persons in the state.
A Gazette notification has also been issued in this regard by the state government.
An official source in the State Social Welfare Department revealed that any normal person marrying a physically challenged person would be given the marriage incentives as per the Gazette notification issued by the state government.
Forms regarding the marriage incentives are in the process of printing.
The source further informed that the marriage incentives would be provided to those getting married under the Register Marriage Act.
According to the provisions of the Act, a girl who has attained the age of 18 years and a boy who has attained the age of 21 years can get married and avail the incentive.
A person can apply for the marriage incentives after three years of their marriage.
The incentive might come to around Rs 30,000, the source added.
The source informed that disability assessment camps would be organized in all the districts of the state.
Such camps were conducted at six different places last year and disability certificates were issued to physically challenged persons after carefully scrutinizing their respective disabilities by the medical board.
Still there are lots of people who are differently able but not yet received disability certificate from the department.
This disability certificate is very much essential while applying for the marriage incentive.
There are also pensions and other schemes for physically challenged persons.
Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme is one such schemes, the source said, adding that the government has also started giving unemployment allowance to unemployed physically challenged persons.
