One suspected UG cadre was killed in a reported encounter by a combined security team ahead of the Independence Day in the night of August 14 at Ngatek Khong under Kakching police station in Thoubal district.
According to a press release issued by Thoubal SSP Clay Khongsai, police received specific information about movement of suspected armed UG cadres in and around Wabagai Tera Pishak with the intention to carry out subversive activities on the eve of the Independence Day.
To pre-empt any subversive activities, Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 Assam Rifles conducted a search operation in and around Wabagai Tera Pishak Ngatek Khong area when the security personnel were fired upon by unidentified persons resulting in a gun-fight lasting for about 15 minutes.
Later, after the gun-fight ceased, a bullet riddled body of a man was found on searching the area.
One M-16 rifle with nine live rounds and a hand grenade with detonator were also recovered from near the corpse which has been deposited at RIMS mortuary, added the SSP.
Another press release issued by Clay Khongsai informed that one RPF cadre was arrested by a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 AR at about 1.30 pm of August 14. Five live rounds of AK ammunition were recovered from the RPF cadre identified as Wahengbam Malemnganba alias Awangamba alias Lenin (29) s/o Binoy of Wabagai Keithelmacha.
Three members of the gang were also apprehended by Thoubal police commandos along with weapons from Samram Khoinaijam Leikai at about 3.30 pm of the same day.
The arrested gang members have been identified as Adhikarimayum Sakhen (26) s/o Borthakur, Khumukcham Tharo (36) s/o Babu and Chabungbam Sunder (22) s/o late Laiba, all belonging to Samram Mayai Leikai.
While one 9 mm pistol with two live rounds were recovered from Sakhen, one hand grenade each were recovered from Tharo and Sunder.
They reportedly disclosed that they were involved in the murder of Kongrailatpam Gouradas of Samram Bamon Leikai on July 10, added the Thoubal SSP.
On the other hand, Imphal East commandos arrested one cadre of the United Naga People's Council (UNPC) from Mantripukhri at about 11 am of August 12. The arrested UNPC cadre is one Mathotmi Keishing (39) s/o late Ningtei of Island near Maphou Dam.
Two demand notes of Rs 4 lakhs each addressed to Jugeshor and Bharat of Mantripukhri were recovered from his possession, informed a press release issued by SP Imphal East Th Radheshyam.
