Imphal, April 08 2012:
Though the total area of Manipur is recorded to be 23,3,77 sq km as measured by the British, the government of Manipur never care to measure the total area of the state officially till date and hence it has no idea of the exact total area of Manipur.
This was disclosed by Dr M Manimohan, Senior Geographer, Census Directorate, Government of India while speaking at a function held at GP Women's College in connection with 3rd Iramdam Khangminnashi Quiz, a district level written quiz competition, organised by Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) today.
Dr Manimohan said that during his long years as a student of Geography in which received Doctorate Degree, he have learnt and discussed Indian, African, European and American geography.
But nowhere in the long line, has the geography of Manipur been discussed.
With no trace of Manipur history or geography in the books prescribed for the students of the state, it seems that the educated persons of the state do not love their own state and have adequate information about the state.
Vice President of HERICOUN, L Ratankumar who was also present at the function, said that with exclusion of anything related to Manipur from the syllabus prescribed for students in the state, love and respect for motherland has declined among the indigenous people of the state.
So, with a view to promote love for motherland among the people, HERICOUN has come up with the idea of organizing the Quiz Competition.
"We all need to come together and unite as one to save Manipuri society from extinction", he exhorted.
In the quiz competition, CC Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize, Tiny Totes Unique School bagged the second prize while the Sacred Heart and Model Academy, Uchekon jointly bagged the third prize for Imphal East category.
For Imphal West category, the first prize was bagged by John Stone Higher Secondary School, the second prize by Herbert School and the third prize by Lilong Master English School.
For Thoubal district, Martin Grammar School bagged the first prize, Zenith Institute took the second prize and JNV Umathel took the third prize.
For Bishnupur district, Loyalam Public School bagged the first prize, Public School Ningthoukhong bagged the second price and the third prize was bagged by St John English School.
It is said that the prizes would be presented to the winners on the occasion of foundation day of HERICOUN on April 16 .
