Imphal, February 08 2013:
The Annual Status of Education Report, ASER 2012, Manipur was released by Opposition leader MLA Dr I Ibohalbi during a function at the Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Lamphelpat today.
ASER is the largest annual household survey of children in rural India that focuses on the status of schools and basic learning.
Speaking at the function as Chief Guest, MLA Dr I Ibohalbi observed that in order to build a peaceful society free from all unwanted happenings, proper and effective education needs to be imparted to the people.
The MLA pointed out that the number of students seeking admission in private schools has increased manifold and it has declined in case of government schools.
This is because of the simple fact that the government schools are seldom monitored by the
concerned authorities.
This has been clearly mentioned in the Annual Status of Education Report, ASER 2012, he added.
The MLA also enquired as to why the report does not cover the urban areas and confined only to the rural areas of the State and expressed his desire to broaden the horizon of ASER.
MLA Dr Ibohalbi went on to observe that children should be nurtured in the best manner right from the primary level during which they can be shaped according to their needs and capabilities.
However, the primary education in the State has failed completely.
"ASER 2012 has brought out a report which shows a threatening and glooming picture of the education system in Manipur.
Considering the facts and figures in the report, there is the urgent need to remain alert or else we might land up in an even worst situation", he said.
Presided over by P Dhanakumar, Chairman of BSEM, the function was also attended by N Mohendro, ex-member of Steering Committee, NER Vision 2020 as Guest of Honour.
