Wildlife Week widely celebrated across the state

Imphal, October 04 2014 : 'As animals have inalienable relations with human beings, we cannot live without them.

However, men continue to exploit the animals to reap their material satisfaction.' This was stated by RK Dinesh, IAS, Secretary, MAHUD, Government of Manipur while speaking on the occasion of 'Divisional level wildlife week celebration' held at Manipur Forest Training school at Luwangshangbam here today.

Organized by Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division under the supervision of Wildlife Wing, Forest Department, Government of Manipur, the function was graced by RK Dinesh, IAS, Secretary, MAHUD, Government of Manipur; Th.Mohendra Pratap, IFS, Conservator of Forest and M.Joy, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East graced the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

In his speech, the chief guest appealed to the people of the state to preserve wildlife, if we wish to exist on this earth.

Informing that 'wildlife week' is celebrated every year in the first week of October beginning on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, Th.Mohendra Pratap said that the Indian Board of Wildlife, earlier known as National Board for Wildlife started celebrating the week in 1955 with the objectives of saving wild life.

As part of the celebration, prizes for various competitions held on October 1 and 2 were also distributed.

In the painting competition with the theme 'wildlife conservation', Abraham Nongthonbam of Christi Jyoti school, E.Luchingba Meitei of St.

Joseph school and Telen Khaidem of Bal Bidya Mandir Hr.

school got the first, second and third positions.

Valendaina Moirangthem of Little Flower school, Rajkumari babysana of Nirmalabas school and Thounaojam Julia of Mannu High school stood first, second and third in the essay writing contest with the topic 'importance of wild life week celebration'.

In the quiz contest, Th.Panti and G.Gaisengpou of P.Namjoklung high school; Th.Prasanta and Th.Inganba of Paree Imom Sindam Sang; and Shalini Thounaojam and Ningombam Nilakamal of Leishemba Maheikol won the first, second and third positions.

Organized by Divisional Forest Officer of Bishnupur district, the 59th Wildlife Week was also celebrated at Toubul High school with Th.Vikramjit, MPS Additional SP of the district, and Dr.Kh.

Shamungou, Chairman of State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Manipur attending as chief guest and president respectively.

Pradhan of Toubul Gram Panchayat Wahengbam Borpati, Principal of Kumbi college K.Jugeshore, and Head Master of Toubul High school K.Tomba were the guest of honour during the celebration.

Prizes for various district level competitions held on September 24 last in connection with the wildlife week celebration were distributed today by the dignitaries present. In spot painting competition, Malemnganbi Yumnamcha of Bishnupur Govt.Jr.

High school, I.Bankimchandra and Luangmei Changkhanpu of Loyala school stood first, second and third positions.

In the article writing contest, Henam Ranjana of Oinam Girls High school, Henam Selly Thoibi of Quality Eng.

School and Moirangthem Bishwajit of JNV Bishnupur won the first, second and third positions.

Leishangthem Debala of Amusana high school, Moirangthem Bishwajit of JNV Bishnupur and Namoijam Ashini of Nambol Higher secondary school were the first, second and third position holders in the quiz competition.

Cash awards of Rs.2000, Rs.1500 and Rs.1000 along with one dictionary and one citation each were given to first, second and third prize winners respectively, while some other students were also given consolation prizes.

During the programme, the organizers also handed over Rs.2000 cash award to Wahengbam Robindro of Ngaikhong Khunou as a mark of encouragement for his efforts to save a pregnant deer earlier this year.

According to a report from Ukhrul district, the Eastern Forest Division, Ukhrul organized a two-day awareness campaign on wildlife conservation in commemoration of 59th wildlife week at the town hall in Ukhrul.

Students, teachers, principals, parents and staff of forest department attended the celebration in which Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul Modak Hrisheekesh attended as chief guest.

Speaking on the evil effects of extensive deforestation in Ukhrul district, the chief guest said that inherited forest resources from our forefathers need to be judiciously managed.

Extensive and unscrupulous exploitation of our forest as well as wild animals has made our environment endangered, he stated.

DFO, Ukhrul L.Manglem who is also a district wildlife warden convinced wildlife pledge to preserve the vanishing wildlife and dwindling forest.

The President PARS Alex Khayi extended gratitude to eastern forest division, Ukhrul letting the Schools student to exhibit their talents on observation of wildlife week.

Meanwhile, in the spot painting competition conducted on the occasion, Khatlui Raihing from Blesso Montessori High School got first prize, Jesse B.P 2nd and Shanmi Zimik 3rd. Soshan Zimik of Scholars Pakshmi High School bagged first in article writing competition, Leishimung Shadang 2nd and Aneo Ahaonoa 3rd..LKhanreingam of KTL Hr.

school won the quiz competition while Reingam Kashung and Thuingaring Kasomwoshi stood second and third positions.

On the occasion of 59th Wildlife Week observance, office of the Divisional Forest Officer and District wildlife Warden, Southern Forest Division Churachandpur released 2 monkeys, one flying squirrel and one tortoise at Hiangkot range under Henglep sub-division in Churachandpur at around 2:30 pm today, adds our Churachandpur correspondent.
