Awareness on GST

A one day awareness on Goods and Services Tax (GST) was held today at DRDA Conference hall by Department of Taxes under the aegis of district administration .
The programme was attended by DC, Senapati Athem Muivah, ADM, SDOs, SDC, District Level Officers, NGOs, business establishment owners and traders of Senapati district to gain knowledge on the newly implemented GST policy of taxation .
The programme was facilitated by many resource persons both from the State level and Central level taxation Department including MFS, R K Khurkishore Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Taxes, Th Sanglou Maram, MFS, Superintendent of Taxes, Anand Sarkar, Consultant GST from Price Waterhouse Cooperation, P Gante, Superintendent Central Goods and Services Tax, Thilu among others .
During the awareness programme, the resource persons highlighted the objectives of Goods and Services Tax, which the Government of India transformed from the old form of taxation, the Value Added Taxes .
The resource persons stated that the objectives of GST are to usher in a single rate of tax and bring uniformity in tax system .
It is also aim to reduce cascading effect of taxes, principle of consumption-based taxation and also facilitate seamless flow of credit across the entire supply chain .
The resource persons also highlighted the shortcomings of the previous from of taxation that only the Centre has the exclusive authority to levy tax on services and excise duty on manufacture of goods and the State has the exclusive authority to levy tax on services and that this exclusive division of fiscal powers has led to multiplicity of indirect taxes and that there is no uniformity of tax rate and structure across the States .
During the programme, traders were also taught how to get registered on GST website.
