Extrajudicial killings: Panel to start proceedings from March 3

Along with an office of the independent Inquiry Commission appointed by Supreme Court to probe into six different cases of extrajudicial killings in Manipur ready to be opened at Hotel Classic here on March 2, the Committee would hold its proceedings from March 3 .
Announcing this to media at the office of Human Rights Alert (HRA) at Kwakeithel here today, Babloo Loitongbam, Executive Director of HRA, informed that PS Moorthy, Secretary of the Supreme Court appointed independent Inquiry Commission, has issued a public notice in this regard on February 24 .
The copies of the said public notices were also made available to the media during the joint press meet addressed by 13 different NGOs, including the Extrajudicial Execution Victims' Families Association, Manipur (EEVFAM) and Human Rights Alert (HRA) .
The public notice says the office of the Commission at Imphal will be functional from March 2 (9 am) at Classic Hotel and the Commission's sittings would be held from March 3 at the Classic Regency (conference hall) on 4th floor of Classic Hotel from March 3 at Imphal will be held at the Classic Regency (Conference Hall) 4th floor of Classic Hotel, North AOC.
This office will also be the secretarial address of the Commission till the conclusion of the proceedings in Imphal.
Babloo further informed that submission of affidavit is upto March 2 and appealed to all those individuals willing to submit affidavits to come forward and discussed it with the officials of HRA without any fear and stated that individuals can depose before the Commission.
"If at all any individual wants to discuss over submission of affidavit, they are most welcome at the office of HRA at Kwakeithel and can also call up at 9856675683 and 8974088818", he added.
It may be noted here that the three-member Commission headed by retired Supreme Court Justice N Santosh Hegde as Chairman and former Chief Election Commissioner JM Lyngdoh and retired DGP of Karnaka Police Ajay Kumar Singh as Members was set up under a directive of the apex court on January 4, 2013 following a petition filed by EEVFAM which pleaded for an independent probe into more than 1500 cases of extrajudicial killings in Manipur.
The apex court has selected only six cases randomly to verify the claims of extrajudicial killings.
The six cases are that of Kh Orsonjit (19) of Sega Road Konjeng Hazari Leikai who was killed by Manipur Police Commandos in 2010; Y Kumarjit (18) of Irom Meijrao who was killed in 2009; Ch Umakanta (24) of Iroishemba Mamang Leikai who was killed in May 2009; E Kiranjit (22) of Thoubal Haokha who was killed in April 2009; N Govind alias Dhopa (25) of Bashikhong Mamang Leikai who was killed in April 2009 and Md Azad Khan (14) of Phoubakchao Makha Leikai who was killed in March 2009 .
14-year old Md Azad Khan, son of Md Wahid Ali was arrested by Manipur Police Commandos in the morning of March 4, 2009 while he was reading newspaper along with a friend named Anand.
Family members tried to stop the CDOs from taking their son away but in vain.
Later, he was found shot dead in a nearby field by the police commandos.
