Imphal, June 29 2019:
The people involved in the construction of the PMGSY road at Kamuching, have claimed that frequent interference and demands by armed groups, led to the abandoning of the work.
A team of RED\MSRRDA engineers went on an inspection trip to the part of the road where the construction work is still active, along with media persons and during the trip, a Mohari who is in charge of overlooking the construction work, identified as S Chonsukhup, said that the road construction work began at Kamuching from February this year.
However, during the work, some armed individuals came and snatched away the keys to the bulldozers and excavators.
The worked resumed after an agreement was reached.
But on March 8, the armed people came again and demanded a sum of Rs 60 lakh to be paid in four instalments by March 15, he said, adding that the earth movers were eventually relocated to Salonphai but the village chief urged the people involved not to resume the work until they (the worker/people involved in the work) came to an agreement with the armed individuals.
As such the work was abandoned, Chongsukhup claimed.
He continued that currently around 3 kilometres long stretch of the road is under construction at Gotangkhot side and road expansion and other works have been completed.
It may be mentioned that an association called Eastern Vaiphei Coordination Committee had expressed disdain at the lacklustre implementation of PMGSY road at Kamuching.
