ILP Demand:: 11 students injured in baton charge

Imphal, June 28 2013 : Undeterred by police action in which 10 students were injured yesterday, the students of CC Higher Secondary School continued to storm towards Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex stepping up the ongoing movement to press the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) System in the State today.

In all, 11 students sustained injuries in the baton charge by the police.

About 500 students of CC Higher Secondary School came out of their school and marched towards Assembly Complex.

However, they were blocked by just three sepoys without any commanding officer near Sanjenthong.

One of the sepoys even pulled the lever of his service carbine and pointed towards the students in a bid to frighten them.

At that moment, a bullet from the gun fell off to the ground.

A student picked it up and handed it over to the sepoy, while some students tried to hide in safe places fearing gun shots.

Unrestrained by the sepoys, the large number of students went on to cross Sanjenthong and marched towards Assembly Complex passing by Chief Minister's Bungalow, Raj Bhavan and Kangla Gate.

The police even failed to block the students near IMC office.

However, a police team led by OC RK Tejbir resorted to baton charge to disperse the students.

Later, SDPO Modhunimai himself began to chase and thrash the student agitators.

The police managed to bring back the students to school.

However, they pelted stones to the police personnel who followed them till the school compound.

The police also retaliated by firing tear gas shells to the students.

The teachers of CC Higher Secondary School came out to pacify the police.

A heated argument ensued between the students and Imphal East Police personnel.

The matter came to an end after the Imphal East Police personnel clarified that the students were injured in the action of Imphal West Police.

Around that same time, students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School were prevented by the police from coming out of the school premises to join the ILP movement.
