Imphal, December 24 2012:
It's not just about the case of molesting a woman but the question of inability of the State government to safeguard the dignity of women in the State as a whole, President of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Kim Gangte has exclaimed.
Talking to mediapersons at the party office here today, Kim Gangte observed that it is not about the molestation of a woman that should be debated but the motive behind the act should also be analysed in depth.
Moreover, the issue has raised the question of inability of the State Government to safeguard the dignity of women in the State.
While condemning the incident of molesting film actress Momoco and opening fire at two other male artistes by NSCN (IM) cadre Livingstone during a musical concert at Chandel district headquarters on December 18 as 'most unfortunate', Kim Gangte appealed to the general public not to say or do anything which might incite communal tension among the various ethnic communities settling in the State.
She also condemned the act of the Manipur police in killing a journalist who was performing his duty and stated that the inability of the Home Minister and the DGP to control the security personnel of the State is quite unfortunate.
She charged the State government and its law enforcing agencies with killing innocent people instead of protecting their lives.
MLA Dr I Ibohalbi, who was also present during the press conference, categorically stated that the State Government should be held squarely responsible for killing of journalist Dwijamani who was covering the public protest over the Chandel molestation case.
The incident clearly indicates that there is no rule of law in Manipur and the security personnel are given free hand to killing civilians instead of safeguarding their lives.
So, there is an urgent need to for Police Reformation in the State, Dr Ibohalbi pointed out.
He further stated that though the State Government is fully aware of the existence of various designated camps of NSCN-IM in Manipur despite the fact that cease fire signed between the Naga rebel group and the Government of India does not extend to Manipur.
So, the State government should destroy all the designated camps of the Naga rebel group in Manipur.
He contended that the present turmoil in the State has come about as the people are dissatisfied over the attitude and conduct of the State Government.
A definite solution to all these problems should be brought at the earliest, he demanded.
Dr Ibohalbi also appealed to the general public to restrain themselves from any unwanted act which would be detrimental to the principle of peaceful co-existence among the various groups of people in the State.
Party Spokesperson Shivachandra; MLA Th Bishwajit and ex-Minister K Tomba were also present on the occasion.
