UNMM reviews civil rights issue in Ukhrul

A team of United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM) on Friday visited and reviewed the prevailing situation concerning the rights issue in the continuing 144 CrPC act promulgation in Ukhrul town, while holding rounds of interaction with members of civil societies.
In the backdrop of the continuing imposition of 144 CrPC Act in Ukhrul town since July 13, a team of UNMM led by its secretary U Nobokishore and co-ordinator Boipu Koireng today met members of civil societies comprising NPMHR, Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL), Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA) and Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and held interactions on the status of civil rights.
UNMM expressed serious concerns on the continuing imposition of prohibitory orders, which it felt could have impact on human rights of the citizens.
"The State government should hold dialogue with civil societies�and insurgent groups, to resolve any standing problems," Nobokishore stated.
Members of the Tangkhul civil societies explained the sufferings endured by the civilians, mainly women and children, during the current situation in the district.
They mentioned how the undue imposition of irrelevant law has affected the commoners in the routine activities, while citing the civilians are living in fear psychosis and uncertainty.
TSl president Sc Ringluiwon was quite vocal on the imposition of CrPC Act and questioned its relevance in Ukhrul headquarters, which she argued has no situation to attract such law.
While urging the State government to restore normalcy in the town, she added, "The Tangkhul bodies would like to render public service under peaceful atmosphere" .
Members in the meeting also shared how the situation has left negative impact on the routine activities of villages and local bodies in and around the town.
UDSA SR Luikham also iterated that the present situation has adversely affected sports activities in the district, and termed the development as unfortunate.
TNL Assembly Affairs speaker LM Able reiterated the rationale behind the promulgation of CrPC Act that has been going on for the last 40 days.
UNMM co-ordinator Boipu Koireng stated that the visit was to assess the prevailing situation and to assess if there were any cases of rights violations among the public.
He added that the organization would pursue the Ukhrul issue at different levels to resolve the imbroglio.
Meanwhile, the TNL has suspended the one-hour daily curfew imposed in the town for indefinite period.
