Imphal, April 21 2015 :
Three people including a woman travelling in a car had a providential escape when a steel cable supporting a suspension bridge snapped at Keirao, Imphal East district this morning.
Infuriated by the incident, local people have burnt down the suspension bridge.
According to information culled from the spot, one car(Maruti 800) was crossing the bridge built over Iril river at Keirao Litan Makhong at
around 10 am when one of the steel cables supporting the bridge snapped all of a sudden on the North Western side.
Even though the bridge did not fall completely into the river, the car got slanted and it was left hanging among the steel cables.
Ch Khudabi (45) of Phunal Maring, her husband Moba and one Angacha John were travelling in the car and they were heading to Canchipur.
Although Moba and Angacha John escaped unscathed,, Khudabi sustained some minor injuries and she was taken to hospital.
The bridge was constructed in 1962 and it was lying in a very pathetic condition since many years back, said some local people.
Another suspension bridge built just a few metres down the river bank snapped in the middle and a portion fell into the river on February 5 last year in which five labourers were wounded.
