Imphal, November 17 2018:
Most of the paddy fields in Kangchup Chiru village have been rendered useless due to lack of water caused by irregular rainfall.
Even though villagers of Kangchup Chiru (which is in Kangpokpi) own many paddy fields in Imphal West district, most of the paddy fields have failed to produce the expected yields.
Showing various paddy fields which failed to bear fruit, Kangchup Chiru village chief TR Jacob said that almost all the 120 households of the village are engaged in agriculture for earning their livelihood.
But this year, all the families will suffer as most of the crops have failed, he said.
He explained that many paddy fields at various parts of the valley, including Lamsang, Phayeng and Kangchup failed to bear fruit this year but the condition of paddy fields of the villagers located at Kharang Loukon (measuring around 10 hectares) is even worse.
Kangchup Chiru village is a part of Kangpokpi district but Kharang Loukon which is situated on the river banks of Maklang river just adjacent to the village falls within Imphal West district, he explained.
Jacob continued that the villagers heard about the Agriculture Department's initiative to supply water pump sets for irrigation in the fields but when the villagers of Kangchup Chiru approached the authority concerned, no positive reply was received and no one came from the Department to assess the situation as well.
He explained that the villagers also failed to take part in any crop insurance scheme due to ignorance, and appealed to the Government to take up necessary steps to ease the suffering of the villagers at the earliest.
