Police file another case against a plebiscite meet

Police has registered another case against a public meeting discussing the plebiscite issue even as government has said that the plebiscite proposal of the UNLF to end armed conflict is a good sign for ushering peace and development in the state.
On the other hand, public meetings on the issue continues and one such meeting was held today at Keithelmanbi bazar in Imphal West district in which a resolution to hold a plebiscite was taken.
The meeting was hosted by the Keithelmanbi Bazar Board Development Committee.
Meanwhile, police have registered a second case against a public meeting discussing the plebiscite issue.
Lamlai police registered the latest case against organizers of a public discussion on 'Public participation in bringing solution to Manipur-India conflict' as a suo-motu case.
The case was registered on March 15 against the organizers of a meeting held at Pukhao on March 14 .
Recently, Lamshang PS had taken up a suo-motu case in connection with the holding of a meeting at Mayang Langjing on February 27 .
In relation to the meeting held at Pukhao, police pinpointed three persons, Thangjam Nongaleima Devi, president of United Meirapaibi Organisation (UMO) unit, Awang Lam Pukhao, Sorojini Leima, president of UMO head office and Thounaojam Rajen, chairman of Laipham Kewa - as accused in the case.
They were alleged of speaking against the Government of India by using seditious language.
Police said their acts tantamount to sedition and filed a case registered under section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with sedition.
It may be remembered that in the House of the Assembly on Wednesday, CM O Ibobi had stated that the plebiscite proposal initiated by the banned militant outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) is a hint of willingness to come to the negotiating table.
On the other hand, in the meeting held today at Keithelmanbi bazar community hall, K Manglem, Member of the Moidangpok Gram Panchayat, H Manglemba, president of the Keithelmanbi Bazar Board Development Committee, and Athou Golmei, social worker were seated at the podium.
Advocate Y Priyokumar, general secretary of the All Manipur Bar Association, and Yumnam Nabachandra, vice-president of the United Committee Manipur (UCM) spoke as resource persons at the meeting.
A three-point resolution was passed in the meeting.
The three points are, to end the Manipur-India conflict through a plebiscite so that people can participate in it, to hand over members of all UG groups arrested outside the state including UNLF chairman, RK Meghen to Manipur government and to send copies of resolutions of today's discussion to the UNO and international human rights bodies.
