Police foil Wakat Meepham, Rally

With tension mounting among the workers of Commerce and Industries Minister Y Erabot, who is also the sitting MLA of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency and Okram Henary, who is preparing to contest in the upcoming election to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly from the same Constituency, Police swung into action and foiled a Wakat Meepham as well as a protest rally at Mantripukhri today.
Tension among the workers of Erabot and Henary in Mantripukhri has been building up since the October 14 incident of opening fire over repairing of a road in the area.
In protest against the incident, workers of Erabot were preparing to take out a rally from Mantripukhri Bengali Colony while the workers of Henary were arranging for a sit-in-protest over the same firing incident at the community hall of Mantripukhri.
Sensing the tense situation and as pre-emptive measures, a team of Imphal East District police led by its Additional SP Angam Kamei descended and foiled workers of both Erabot and Henary from going ahead with their respective protest rally and Wakat Meepham.
Police also fired tear gas canisters to disperse the agitated workers of both the parties Restriction under section 144 CrPC has been subsequently imposed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
