Lawyers have pivotal roles to play for the safeguard of human rights under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958.This was stated by former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, RK Manisana while speaking on the occasion of the 58th foundation day of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) today at Uripok Cheirap Court complex here.
Former Chief Justice RK Manisana said the lawyers have greater role to play in Manipur where there have been unending reports of human rights violation at the hands of security forces deployed in the state.
The celebration function of the 58th foundation day of AMBA was graced by ex-Vice Chairman of Bar Council of India, L Nandakumar, AMBA President S Brajabihari and Registrar of Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench Ng Max Phajang and District and Session Judge, Manipur East Th Surbala as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, secretary of Muslim Advocates and Legal Service Organisation, Md.Rabi Khan wondered the present status of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC), which is set up by the state government.
Noting that the MHRC has been silenced by the state government on the Khwairamband incident, Rabi Khan observed that the judiciary system is undermined by the executive and legislature.
Vice-President of AMBA, S Manihal said the association was formed in 1951 with only 11 members.
But now the association has over 2000 members.
Some of its members become renowned Chief Justices and politicians.
Retired members of AMBA were honoured during the celebration function apart from observing silence to show respect to the departed members of the association.
