Stops scheduled marriage of minors

Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West I, Alek Muivah, has issued an order to stop the marriage of two minors after a petition was filed by concerned parties to stop the marriage.
According to a source, the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer of Social Welfare De-partment, Manipur, Khaidem Premjit, filed a petition to stop the marriage of two minors (below the age of 18) which is slated for tomorrow.
According to the petition, the bride to be is only 14 years old, and has been staying with the boy (who himself is also a minor) after eloping on June 3 .
The boy is from Wangoi while the girl is from Lourembam.
It pointed out that the news of the marriage preparations reached the authority con-cerned through one of the Advocates of the Legal Aid Clinic and the petition included an Aadhaar enrolment receipt which mentions the girl's date of birth as March 2, 2003.After hearing the petition, the Court directed the Child Welfare Committee to take up necessary steps to prevent the marriage of the minors including informing the boy's parents regarding the Court's directive.
It also ordered the Child Marriage Prohibition officer to take up steps to rescue the girl and also directed Wangoi police station OC to assist the officer in the task to prevent any unwanted incident from happening.
