Ukhrul, July 14 2013:
An easy calm has shadowed Ukhrul town on Sunday evening as the Tangkhul frontal organisations (TFO) 'invoked indefinite public curfew' from midnight as church goers and commuters hurried homeward amidst intermittent security drill.
With the TFO comprising TNL, TSL, TKS, TMNL and zonal Tangkhul bodies bend on going ahead with the public curfew to press their demand for removal of the incumbent Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, normal life in the entire district has came to a grinding halt since Sunday midnight.
A combined team of Manipur Rifles and Manipur Police conducted a heavy security drill in more than dozen vehicles in Ukhrul headquarters.
The town witnessed such an intense security exercise for the first time ever since NSCN (IM) supremo Th.Muivah's proposed homecoming.
A reliable source said there has been strong order from state Home Department to quell any form of violent agitation in view of the TFO's public curfew.
TKS president Yangmi Khapai asserted that the TFO will ''never submit to any pressure untill the demand is fulfilled' .
In total condemnation to the heavy security exercise today, TSL president Ringluiwon questioned the motive of the State Government in the present situation, saying, ''In no way the TFO's demand and agitation has caused any threat to the public.
Why is the government not willing to our genuine demand?'' she asserted.
A reliable source, however, stated that the state government is not interested with the demand placed by the TFO.
In this wake the situation in Ukhrul is not likely to get any relief as the stand-off may persist unless intervention comes forth from the state government.
