Imphal, June 14 2016:
The All Manipur Bengali Students' Union
(AMBSU), Jiribam has started boycotting 53
Lower Primary and High Schools in the district
from June 7 in connection with a row over a language taught in these schools, our correspondent
reports.
AMBSU has been demanding the implementation of provision 29 (2)(f) of RTE Act,
2009 in Jiribam under which the student's
mother tongue should be the medium of teach-
ing in the school up to primary level.
A memorandum submitted to the Educa-
tion Minister and other authorities concerned
on May 12 demanded that Bengali language
should be made the medium of teaching up to
primary level in schools located in Bengali
inhabited areas of the sub-division and re-
cruitment of Bengali language teachers for
primary schools.
On June 6, the union submitted a reminder
of the May 12 memorandum with a warning
to launch indefinite boycott of schools located
in Bengali inhabited areas of Jiribam in case
the State Govt fails to respond within June 7.
The union, at a press meet held today also
said they will continue with the boycott until
the State Government reponds to their de-
mands.
Out of the 53 schools, 46 are Lower Primary Schools and 7 are High Schools.
