Imphal, January 12 2018:
Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Chairman L Radhakishore has warned that all those people who have been polluting rivers by disposing waste materials would be booked according to law.
Speaking at a cleanliness drive carried out at Litan Sareikhong, Ukhrul district today under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's Pakriti Paryavaran Aur Hum programme, Radhakishore said that people who dispose waste materials at improper places may be fined Rs 2000 to Rs 2 lakh or imprisoned for one to three year(s) or both types of penalty may be imposed simultaneously under the Solid Was e Management Rules 2016 .
Necessary notifications about booking polluters have been sent to DCs, Zilla Parishads, Gram Panchayats, Autonomous District Councils, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.
Disposal of waste materials at improper places including rivers and lakes would be effectively checked by March, asserted the MPCB Chairman.
Water samples collected from the upstream and downstream of Litan Sareikhong bridge and tested by MPCB scientists showed that the water of Thoubal River is polluted over the normal level, Radhakishore said.
Pointing out that disposal of waste materials into the river by people settled along the banks is primarily responsible for the water pollution, the MPCB Chairman appealed to the village chiefs, youth clubs and women activists of Litan Sareikhong to check disposal of waste materials in the river.
He further appealed to all the people not to dispose waste materials into rivers and public places.
