Imphal, April 11 2019:
People For Animals has decried the notification signed by President of India on April 4 which transferred various aspects of animal welfare and protection including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, animal shelter etc under Ministry of Agriculture, from Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change.
A press release issued by PFA stated that the notification which was signed to make sure that steps of protection for cows are improved is discriminatory against different kinds of animals and birds.
This change will only weaken the already vulnerable 'Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act' and it will be impossible to control the violation of animals and birds, it remarked.
It further stated that the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DADF), Agriculture Ministry focuses on production of milk, eggs, meat and other products while Animal Welfare Division of Environment Ministry aims to safeguard and protect animals and birds.
Denouncing the decision of the Central Government, PFA stated that it will not be possible on the part of Agriculture Ministry to take care of animals while appealing all to refrain from using animals as just mere tools in politics and religion.
It asserted that PFA will extend full support to any movement taken up by animal lovers and organisations concerned regarding the matter.
