Sensitization prog on drug abuse held

As part of ongoing campaign to uproot rampant abuse of drugs by Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) in different area of the State, CADA in association with Youth Development Club (YDC), Heirok Litan Wangma organized a one-day discussion programme on the impact of drugs and liquour on the society and the role of public to curb the menace today around 3.30 pm at Litan Wangma, Heirok part 3 in Thoubal District.
The awareness programme was attended by Dipanjit Ningthoujam, Secretary Geneal CADA, Saikhom Ipopishak, President Youth Development Club, Heirok Litan Wangma, Nepram Rame, Advisor, Youth Development Club (YDC), Aheibam Tombi, Secretary, Heirok Litan Wangma Meira Paibee and Thounaojam Ibopishak, Advisor, Youth Development Club as presidium members.
Mayengbam Budhi, Secretary Organisation CADA who spoke as resource person in the programme said that the widespread use of intoxicant substances including drugs, liquour, tobacco has become a norm in our society and its usage is quite rampant during religious rites, and rituals by young people and aged persons as well.
Such extensive consumption of intoxicant substances may push our society to a critical situation in which cases of dreaded disease like Cancer may increase in the next few years, he added.
He continued that availability of liquour is widespread in the State even though Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 is in place to stop its selling and added that liquor has become one of essentials items in many religious functions, rituals, rites etc.
which in itself is a serious disease for the society.
One starking fact which is currently practice in our society is the necessity of liquour while performing last rites of a person, he added and said that it is high time that people shed such bad habit in the interest of the future generation.
He also appealed the stake holders and concerned authority to enact State Drug Policy to nab the drug peddlers and to award exemplary and punitive punishment to involved traffickers.
