Kakching, August 02 2022:
Six persons including Pradhan of May eng Lamjao Gram Panchayat, Kakching district U Narjit have launched a relay hunger strike at Lamjao Mayai Leikai community hall demanding timely distribution of urea to farmers.
The five other individuals involved in the hunger strike launched today are Thounaojam Joykumar, U Rajmohol, U Ranjit, U Babuyaima and M Maniton.
Speaking to mediapersons, U Narjit shared that previously fertilizers had been distributed to farmers in the area intermittently.
However, the amount distributed is not adequate enough to meet the requirements of cultivation, he added.
As such farmers of Lamjao, Tejpur and Laimanai had staged a sitin-protest since July 30 based on the fear that this lack of urea will result in a decline in harvest.
Unfortunately, this step was not met with a positive response from the relevant authorities and hence the relay hunger strike has been launched, the Pradhan noted.
He added that the protesting farmers are prepared to launch bandhs and other forms of protests if their demands go unheeded.
Lastly, he appealed to the local MLA and Agriculture Minister to look into the matter and take up appropriate measures in the interest of farmers.
