Landslides block Imphal-Moreh highway

Due to the incessant rains in the last few days, major landslides have occurred at many areas of the hill districts during the last two days.
Landslides along the Imphal-Moreh National Highway 102 have damaged many sections of the highway while people who had gone to Moreh could not come back to Imphal due to the landslips.
Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip, MLA DK Korungthang along with officials visited the landslide affected sites of Imphal-Moreh highway on Sunday.
The team inspected several places and examined many affected areas starting from Tengnoupal of Imphal-Moreh highway.
More than five landslides have occurred in Tengnoupal area alone leaving the roads cracked.

The team also found out landslides between Tengnoupal and Khudengthabi led to sinking of parts of the highway.
Cracks on the road stretches were noticed near Lokchao Bridge while fallen trees had already blocked the road at Khudengthabi.
Kh Ratankumar said that many areas along the National Highway 102 have been damaged due to the landslides which led to the total shut down of Imphal-Moreh road.
Many areas of the National Highway between Tengnoupal and Moreh need to be repaired while some areas were in serious need of either repair or construction.
The Minister said that it will be dangerous for heavy vehicles to travel along the highway and assured to expedite works so as to enable resumption of regular transport services between Imphal and Moreh.
Many excavators (JCBs) have been put into service to clear debris along the road - two from Moreh side and many from Tengnoupal side.
The Minister also said that PWD officials have been asked to submit a report on the issue and once it is submitted, roads and areas which needed to be repaired or reconstructed will be known.
Until then, there can be no time-frame on the resumption of the services along the National Highway, added the minister.
Due to the incessant rains in the last few days, major landslides have occurred in Chandel District claiming many lives.
People have been reeling under untold hardship due to the disruption in transport services.
MLA DK Korungthang, who also accompanied the team lauded the ministers for visiting the affected areas and according priority to the issue.
