Imphal, April 02 2015 :
A driver and a handyman, who were abducted by unknown miscreants on March 31 night, escaped from the clutches of their captives today.
It is said that the driver and handyman are engaged in the transportation of FCI rice.
The driver has been identified as Elangbam Kumar (46) s/o Ibotombi of Top Khongnangkhong and the handyman as Md Era Khan (18) s/o Abdul Satar of Yairipok Phoudel.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, Kumar said that after unloading FCI rice in Imphal, he returned to Sekmai and slept inside their truck with his handyman in front of Ingo Rice Hotel.
At around 10 pm, around five armed unknown persons asked them to open the door.
Although, they did not open the door for some time, the miscreants forced them to open it, he added.
After they were beaten up on gun point, the miscreants took them to an unknown hilltop after crossing Sekmai river, Kumar said.
One of the unknown men told the duo that they would be shot dead if the truck owner fails to give them due taxes for two years, Kumar said.
As the duo had left all their belongings inside their truck, they could not give the phone numbers of their families and truck owner.
After they spent a night at the place, they ran out from there taking advantage of their absence and reached Mapao village today.
Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association general secretary M Tomba urged all concerned to shun all forms of harassments against drivers and handymen.
The association had lodged a complaint regarding the incident yesterday, he added.
Tomba said that such incidents are happening on the National Highways of the State due to the absence of proper security.
