Imphal, August 31 2013 :
Government schools are indeed versatile! They can serve many other purposes besides being the "temple of learning".
A classroom of one Government High School in Imphal West was found converted into a henhouse recently.
And now, another Lower Primary School located at Hatta Golapati in Imphal East was found "rented out'' to a family during the inspection programme of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today.
The school was found locked and its Head Master Md Abdul Malik was also not present at the time of the inspection.
Abdul Malik's wife Ebemcha told the inspection team that her husband has taken leave for medical treatment at New Delhi.
The school has only Class I and Class II with three teachers- two female and one male.
Classes are conducted from 9 am to 12 noon, she said.

She further maintained that the school gets all items for Mid-Day Meal Scheme and one Ayub Khan from Kwakta, who was found staying in the school along with his family during the inspection, has been kept as a caretaker inside the school building without taking any rent.
Talking to media persons, Secretary General of DESAM Arambam Thoithoi said that the DESAM has been inspecting the Government schools and colleges right from its inception in order to bring about a significant change in the education system of the State.
The volunteers of DESAM are closely monitoring the Government teachers.
Most of them care only for their salaries, but not concerned with the degrading education system in the State.
The teachers, who are supposed to teach good values to students, are cheating by signing the attendance register for all days including Sundays and holidays even though they were not present even for a single day in a week, he said.
Thoithoi further stated that the LP School at Hatta Golapati was also found closed with no student during an inspection earlier.
The negligence of teachers and officials of Education Department would have serious implication on the education system of the State.
The Secretary General appealed to the authorities concerned to take stringent action against those erring teachers and officials who act as stumbling blocks in the path of revolutionizing the State's education system.
