Imphal, September 29 2013:
A non-local, who has been allegedly disturbing the marital life of a woman from Lamshang area day and night over the phone, was rounded up by volunteers of Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FREINDS) after the matter was brought to the notice of the organization by the husband of the woman.
The accused non-local man identified as Lalit Shah (19), a masoner by profession from Bhagalpur district of Bihar but presently staying in a rented house at Nagamapal Kangjabi Leirak, paraded before media persons at the office of FREINDS here today.
Addressing media persons in this regard, P Premkumar, Organising Secretary of FREINDS, stated that such type of incidents of harassing women in Manipur is not rare.
However, the involvement of a non-local mistry, who used slang and abusive languages over the phone, was very unfortunate.
The husband of the woman had made a written complaint to FRIENDS in this connection saying that his wife has been constantly harassed by a non-Manipuri over the phone.
When the husband picked up the phone, the accused would say it's wrong number in Hindi language and hung up the phone, but always make calls to the number again and again.
At times, the husband has even verbal fighting over the phone with the accused.
Fed up of the constant harassment, the husband ultimately lodged a complaint with FRIENDS and the accused was rounded up today, Premkumar informed.
Premkumar pointed out that in accordance to the census report of 2011, migrant workers constituted one-third of the total population of the State.
By now, their population might have been increased manifold.
Along with the increase in the population of outsiders in the State, the incidents of crimes have also increased considerably.
But there is still no authority in the State to monitor what these migrant workers are doing in the State.
