Imphal, April 23 2011:
In an unfortunate incident, an irate mob today arrested a 69 year old cobbler and handed him over to the police after he was caught attempting to rape a nine years old girl at Sugnu bazar in Thoubal district.
The fateful incident occurred around 1 pm today when the cobbler Thokchom Menjor persuaded the girl to enter his shop and tried to rape her by terrifying her.
Fortunately the girl screamed for help.
Family members on hearing the screams rushed to the shop and found the girl in a state of shock.
Local people also gathered there after hearing the screams and the commotions and destroyed the wares inside the shop.
The mob was on the verge of burning down the shop but the decision was averted since they found the shop and the house he was living was rented.
Later he was handed over to Sugnu police station.
Doubts persisted if the cobbler raped the girl or not, and local people and family members brought the girl to RIMS hospital today for a medical test but returned since today was a holiday on account of Khongjom Day.
Accused Thokchom Menjor is the son of Thokchom Meina of Khangabok Awang Leikai, Thoubal district.
He was renting a room at the victim's house at Sugnu Bazar to run his business.
