Ukhrul, February 19 2014:
Much to the delight of the festival revellers, a bevy of Tangkhul damsels decked in the best of their traditional fineries stole the limelight today on the grand finale of Hunphun Luira phanit (Festival) as they sang and swayed to the folk song during the Laa Khanganui performance.
On Wednesday afternoon, the festival revellers could not ask for more as a bevy of beautiful Tangkhul lasses draped in colourful attires and embellishments, from different colonies of Ukhrul, swayed to the folk song during the Laa Khanganuian adored dance that's strictly meant for the maidens.

More than 100 girls from six localities of Ukhrul took part in the "Virgin Dance" competition which was performed and watched by audiences for over three hours.
In the days of yore, Laa Khanganui was performed as a beauty contest for maiden Tangkhul girls.
It is believed that the dance is very sacred and taboo for unchaste girls.
A Tangkhul legend says if any girl, who failed the criteria, takes part in the pageant, an omen is bound to show up indicating that she is not eligible.
After a hectic assessment of the participants who performed on locality basis, a panel of judges assessed their display and finally declared Luiyainaotang girls as the winner of the "Virgin Dance" .
Deputy Commissioner Dr.SK Chourasia and SDO Worshang Hungyo graced the occasion as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Chourasia lauded the organisers for the upkeep of the age-old culture and stated the huge public presence speaks a lot about the spirit of togetherness among the people.
"as the community come and rejoice during the festivalit symbolizes peace and harmony," he added.
Ukhrul DC and SDO were apparently impressed with the significance of "Laa Khanganui", and made a point to pose for lens along with some of the participating girls.
In today's indigenous games, Ramreingam Kaping of Awungtang emerged victorious in All Tangkhul Open Wrestling competition and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.20,000.A tug of war competition was also held among the different localities of Hunphun (Ukhrul) village in which Khararphung locality bagged the championship in Men's category while Tangrei colony bagged the winner in women's category.
