Imphal, August 11, 2014:
Manipuri Student's Federation (MSF) has urged the general public to cease all forms of entertainment programme on 10th Student Martyrdom Day, which falls on August 16. Speaking to reporters, MSF Vice-President RN Koireng said that MSF has been observing the day since 2005 to mark respect to the supreme sacrifice made by Pebam Chitaranjan in 2004. The student activist put himself on fire on the demand for removal of AFSPA from the State on August 15, 2004. He succumbed to burn injuries on August 16. Koireng said that the day is to be observed not only to remember Chitaranjan's sacrifice but also tell the world that people of Manipur unitedly stand against AFSPA and rampant violation of human rights.
He also requested the private channels to broadcast patriotic programmes instead of entertainment programmes on the day.
He also appealed to all concerned not to impose any kind of bandh and blockade on the day and co-operate them in observing the day.
Paying floral tributes at Bishnupur Bazar, Jiribam and Takhellambam Leikai Youth Club, silent rally from Takkhellambam Leikai to THAU ground and a public meeting and mass blood donation camps at Jiribam and THAU ground would be the main highlights of the day, he said.
Saying that candle light vigils will be held at Takhellambam Leikai and MSF office at night, Koireng urged the NGOs, Meira Paibis and local clubs to take out similar candle light vigils in their respective localities.
