Kakching Battalion of 28 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) organised a tree plantation drive at Battalion Headquarters, Company Operating Bases and near by villages yesterday to mark the occasion of World Environment Day.
In recent times, there has been a rapid increase in deforestation and felling of timber woods which has affected the environment and led to global warming while increase in pollution has resulted in depletion of ozone layer.
The mankind has been exploiting the natural resources since ages, but there has been negligible effort to restore the natural balance.
Keeping this in view, Kakching Battalion including all the Company Operating Bases organised plantation drives to encourage local people and youth to celebrate World Environment Day.
The plantation drive included planting of various varieties of fruit bearing plants.
All the villagers along with village Chief participated in the event with enthusiasm.
The event was appreciated by the local administration and the villagers and promised to conduct such plantation drives on regular basis.
In the end Commandant of Kakching Batallion stressed upon the growing problems of waste disposal of plastics and emphasized that ban on plastic water bottles, bags and cups will result in restoration of ecological balance.
