Imphal, July 02 2020:
Following the 'mysterious' death of Sarju Naoroibam, a 21-year-old recovered COVID-19 patient recently, the Meetei Christian Churches Council has urged the Government and Health Department to step up efforts to provide proper counselling to the patients and all concerned.
Condoling the demise of the 21-year-old girl, who was found hung to death inside her room, and sharing the grief of the family members, the council in a statement said there is urgent need for providing proper counselling to the people, especially the patients and their family members to help them cope with the stress and stigma associated with the disease.
It may be noted that the girl who returned from Chandigarh via Delhi by Shramik Special train was found allegedly hung to death on the morning of June 28 at her residence at Singjamei Wangma Pebiya Pandit Leikai, Imphal East.
She had tested positive for the virus on June 2 and was discharged from JNIMS after recovery on June 14.Sarju had just completed another 14 days home quarantine period when she died.
Emphasising that the stress and stigma associated is more dangerous than the disease itself, the council said the Government and health authorities should acknowledge this problem at the earliest and initiate necessary counselling to all concerned.
The council prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
