Imphal East records highest overdose cases followed by Imphal West: Report

Imphal East recorded highest numbers of overdose with 106 cases, followed by Imphal West with 95 cases of overdose during April 1, 2016 to August 27, 2018 .
This was informed by SASO at the International Overdose Awareness Day observation at Manipur Press Club, Major Khul, Imphal today.
According to a report of SASO, an estimated 1,90,900 people die from opioid overdose each year.
In Manipur, most common reason for overdose is due to mixing of heroin with depressant or with alcohol.
Intake of large quantity of sleeping tablets (benzodiazepines) can also cause opioid overdose.
Quality of heroin is also another factor for overdose.
People who used drugs after returning from treatment in rehabilitation centre are also at risk of overdose, said the report.
2011 recorded the highest number of overdose cases with 421 cases.
SASO has responded to a total of 1126 cases and has saved 1104 lives with lifesaving drug - naloxone, said the report.
During April 1, 2016 to August 27, 2018, a total of 220 OD cases including 7 expired cases were recorded.
