Imphal, July 30 2012:
For the preservation and protection of their cultural relics and other indigenous products for posterity, Maring people have been demanding a museum of their own.
At present there are about 45 Maring individuals, who are non Christians and are practicing the indigenous religion in Sandang Senba Maring village.
KP Khamba, one among the few Maring tribals, who still follows the indigenous religion, informed Hueiyen Lanpao that along with passing away of the remaining few people practicing indigenous religion, the true culture and tradition of Maring tribe is likely to get extinct.
So, if the traditional items and products of Maring tribe are not protected and preserved, the future generations would hardly understand what Maring culture is all about.

"It is only because of these few surviving individuals of indigenous faith that the culture and tradition of Maring still existing.
The traditional folk songs, music as well as the associated drums, spears, knives and other cultural artifacts used by the our forefathers will ceased to exist if no definite strategy is chalked out to protect them", Khamba said.
He pointed out that a museum should be set up at Sandang Senba Maring village where the existing "Pakhang Phan" and "Leisha Phan", which have got extinct for other tribes, may be preserved for future generation.
Khamba also stressed on the need for establishment of an institution where the songs and dances of Maring tribe could be taught and learnt.
