Combing operations conducted at various places

Imphal, November 28 2011:
The Imphal West Police Commandos carried out a combing operation in Paona Bazar area at Governor Road today as security measures prior to the visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Imphal on December 3 .
The combing operation which was carried out under the leadership of DSP, City Police Commando Unit, S Ibocha started at around 2:30 this evening.
The commandos surrounded the whole area starting from the northern shopping mall to the entrance of Paona bazaar including the Governor road.
All people in the area including those staying in rented apartments in hotels were also interrogated.
Female police commandos were also deployed in the operation.
Among the 400 plus people interrogated at the spot, 12 of them who were not able to furnish their identity cards were further detained at City Police station for further interrogation.
They were later released.
Speaking to media persons DSP S Ibomcha said that the operation was carried out as a part of the security measures taking up prior to the visit of the PM and Sonia Gandhi so that no unwanted incidents occur during their visit.
He also said that such operations will be conducted in different places in Imphal area.
Meanwhile, Imphal East District Police Commandos today also conducted raid at lodging hotels and rented houses in Chingmeirong-Sangakpham area to check and verify strangers as part of the same exercise.
During the raid conducted by a team of district police commandos led by Additional SP Angam Kamei, two individuals have been picked up for verification.
They were, however, released after the verification.
Similar raids were also reportedly conducted at houses and hotels in Palace Compound, Pureiromba Market area, Andro parking, etc.
However, there is no report any individual being picked up for verification in these raids.
