CCpur, January 28 2020:
The Zomi Student's Federation, as well as the Zomi Human Rights Foundation (ZHRF), have expressed concern over the January 19 incident at PVCP Khudengthabi wherein a lady IPS officer was allegedly at the receiving end of the jawans on duty.
The student's body said that although a week has passed since the incident the veracity of the claim or otherwise hasn't been made public.
It believes that the matter is brought to its logical conclusion sooner than later in the interest of all concerned.
When atrocities on women - including rapes, killings and deliberate dishonouring of the dignity of women is growing in the country, and there is a concerted effort to put an end to this menace, the Khudengthabi incident involving man/woman in uniforms, both as victim and alleged perpetrator, cast a big shadow and shattered the very foundational base of security in our society.
If the allegation is true, it would encourage people to outrage the modesty of women all over the country.
A fitting punishment under the Indian Penal Code is a must, and the Assam Rifles should not shield such jawan to uphold its pride, dignity and honour, said the ZSF in their statement.
Meanwhile, the Zomi Human Rights Foundation (ZHRF) said the Assam Rifles, often referred to as 'Friends of Hills People' were considered to be men of strong and sound morality in their conducts while maintaining law and order in the State.
However, to the utter surprise and bewilderment of the Foundation, the alleged conduct and action of the Jawan on January 19 last at Khudengthabi Check post is beyond what is expected of them.
The act of assault and harassment on the lady officer violated the basic human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Foundation strongly condemned such assault and harassment on a police officer and wonder what a civilian would have gone through.
The rules of law must prevail irrespective of high and low and everyone must be treated equally.
The Foundation, therefore, urged the authority concerned to initiate necessary action against the Rifleman.
