Imphal, August 27 2011:
Over 500 freight trucks including oil tankers and LPG carriers began to arrive here today from Jiribam under heavy security cover amidst tension created by agitation and counter agitation by SHDDC and UNC respectively over the demand for a full fledged Sadar Hills district.
Meanwhile, a school and a vehicle were set ablaze at two different places late last night by suspected volunteers of SHDDC and UNC.
The 500 freight trucks inclusive oil tankers and LPG carriers began arriving in Imphal in the late afternoon today.
A police source said, there were no disruptions by agitators as the trucks negotiated NH 53 under heavy security cover.
Even as this news is being written, the convoy of goods trucks are still arriving in the capital city.
NHs 39 and 53, both passing through Sadar Hills autonomous district council, have been shut by SHDDC since midnight July 31 demanding a full fledged Sadar Hills district.
The Nagas under the aegis of UNC started a counter agitation on NHs 39, 53 and 150 from August 21 in an attempt to protect "Naga land" from being transferred to Sadar Hills district in the event the demand is granted by the state government.
The impasse over the demand continues to make life difficult across the state with prices of essential commodities rising exponentially every passing day.
Suspected volunteers of SHDDC razed a UJB school in Kangchup Chiru yesterday at around 9:30 pm.
The school is located in the contiguous Sadar Hills autonomous district council area.
Suspected volunteers of UNC set a Tata DI (MN01W 9550) on fire yesterday at about 11 pm in Wakhong Khul, 7 km from Senapati police station.
The vehicle was said to have come from Mao gate and was approaching Senapati district HQ when arsonists attacked it.
