Imphal, June 27 2012:
Not-withstanding the rising water levels of most of the rivers draining Manipur valley, IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip has categorically stated that people need not panic over possible floods.
Ngamthang accompanied by the IFCD Chief Engineer, SEs and AEs inspected river banks which are feared vulnerable to floods.
Speaking to media persons during the inspection tour, the IFCD Minister said that officials of the department have been put on duty round the clock and flood fighting materials have been distributed to areas prone to floods.
Reinforcement of river banks where water was leaking or overflowing was going on, he said.
As most of the reinforcement work was completed ahead of the monsoon season, there is no eminent threat for any devastating flood, claimed the Minister.
The Minister and his team inspected river banks at Sanjenthong, Golapati, KR Lane, Lamlong, Minuthong, Uripok and Sagolband.
However, information received from the flood control room said that the situation is still not out danger even though the water level of Imphal river has been falling steadily.
Nambul river is also flowing close to the highest flood stage.
On the other hand, water levels Imphal river and Iril river have been rising slowly at Lilong.
However, water levels of all the rivers flowing through Thoubal and Bishnupur districts have receded below warning levels.
