'E.Coli detected in Lamphel water bodies'

Imphal, July 25 2011:
The garbage dumping site of Imphal Municipal Council which is located at the KRYPSA ground Lamphelpat has became a den of bacteria which causes malady in the adjoining areas of Lamphel and Langol.
Fearing endemic outbreak in the surrounding area local people today demanded not to dumb any more garbage at the area.
Speaking to reporters in a press meet held at Langol Game Village, secretary All Community Welfare Association with Surrounding Areas S Tombisana said that the negligence on the part of the IMC in dumping garbage in the site has led to outbreak of many diseases in the surrounding areas.
IMC is not dumping the biomedical wastes properly nor is IMC covering the garbage with earth and disinfecting them.
Many poor people are earning their livelihood by fishing from the area.
However the negligence on the part of the IMC in proper dumping of the wastes has made the water bodies of the area toxic.
In a shocking outcome, Manipur Pollution Control Board in a test had confirmed E.Coli contamination in the water of the surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, a team of IMC led by Chairperson L Raghumani inspected the dumping site today and assured proper maintenance of the dumping site.
He said that the new dumping site at Lamdeng is still under construction and it will be completed within the next five or six months.
Until the new dumping site is fully completed and become functional, IMC will be using KRYPSA ground as its dumping site.
He appealed to the local people to cooperate with the IMC assuring to cover the wastes by earth after disinfecting them.
He also assured to dilute lime and bleaching powder to disinfect the water bodies at the earliest to prevent any possible endemic outbreak.
