Seminar stresses people's participation in Loktak conservation

Imphal, June 23 2011:
The two-day long campaign organized jointly by Loktak Brigade of Red Shield Division and Loktak Development Authority with a seminar on 'Conserving and Managing Loktak' at INA hall, Moirang concluded today.
Brigadier RS Grewal, Deputy GOC of Red Shield Division gave the inaugural address to the gathering that was attended by inhabitants of Loktak and several top officials.
Principal Secretary (Forest and Environment) Dr J Suresh Babu, in his key note address, stressed on the need people participation in the conservation of Loktak.
The seminar was conducted in two sessions.
The first session aimed at 'Identifying the Issues' was moderated by Dr H Tombi Singh, retired VC of MU.
Many resource persons talked on various topics related with the conservation of the largest fresh water lake in the North Eastern region of the country.
This was followed by introduction to Historical and Cultural Perspective of Loktak Lake by Mr Hemamcha Sobha, President, Moirang Thangjing Yangeirol Marup.
Mr Ritesh Kumar WISA, New Delhi delebrated Challenges for Integrated Management of Loktak Lake.
The Ecological Issues were brought forward by Dr Khangenbam Shamungan, Retd Reader DM College of Science.
Livelihood Issues of Loktak Community were deliberated upon by Ksh Bimola, Retd Prof Pol Science Dept, MU.
Local Community Intrests & Aspirations was articulated by Ningthoujam Chaoba Singh, National Awardee.
The Loktak Lake Management Concept of LDA was elucidated by Th Ibobi Singh Project Director LDA.
Security Forces Perspective was given by Colonel Naresh Bhardwaj, Commandant 33 Assam Rifles.
The second session was aimed at 'Saving the Loktak' moderated by Prof Amar Yumnam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, MU.
Ng Sanajaoba Meitei, Project coordinator, LDA brought forward effort under the Short Term Action Plan.
Changthem Momon Singh, LLM, Lecturer LMS Law college deliberated upon the Manipur Loktak Lake (Protection) Act 2006 .
Haobijam Kulla, Retd Lecturer Manipur College gave the Community Perspective of Loktak Regulation.
Loktak Lake Vision 2015 was given out by Th Ibobi Singh, Project Director, LDA.
At the end of the seminar a vote of thanks was given by Colonel Naresh Bhardwaj, Commandant 33 Assam Rifles followed by an elegant lunch for all present during the seminar.
