The International Bio-diversity Year 2010 and International Day for Biological Diversity was observed today at Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroishemba today under the aegis of the Manipur Biodiversity Board.
Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Chief Secretary DS Poonia lamented shrinkage of biodiversity hot spots of Manipur which were once very rich.
Lack of awareness among the people has been one fundamental factor for the diminishing bio-diversity, Poonia said.
Observing that Manipur is home to a number of endemic species of animals and plants, he stated that steps will be initiated to develop places such as Ukhrul, Senapati, Koubru hills etc as biodiversity sites.
The observance was attended by A Kharsising, RJ Ranjit of Care Earth, Chennai and Director of UGC Staff College, Manipur University RK Ranjan as presidium members.
Later, prizes were distributed to winners of the essay competition held on May 20 on the topic 'Living in Harmony'.
