Imphal, March 22 2013:
Another scam has surfaced in Food Corporation of India (FCI) with 1200 metric tonne of rice meant for Manipur gone missing after being taken out from the FCI godown at Dimapur.
Source from Dimapur confirmed that the huge quantity of rice had been taken out from the FCI godown at Dimapur in 80 freight trucks upto March 6.Even though there is instruction for delivering the rice within seven days of its withdrawal from Dimapur, not a single truck has reached Imphal till today.
Possibilities of the transport contractors selling out the rice in the black market are being speculated.
Reliable sources said that withdrawal of state share of rice from FCI godown at Dimapur has been restricted following the incident.
However, Area Manager of FCI, Imphal Kamei Gongreipou asserted that request for stopping withdrawal of State share of the rice from FCI godown at Dimapur was made on March 8 since the roof condition of FCI godown at Imphal is not good, apart from the fact that the godown is presently filled with rice to the maximum.
The Area Manager also maintained that around 4,000 metric tonne of rice, which were withdrawn from Dimapur godown are on their way to Imphal.
Another source disclosed that FCI authority has issued an official order instructing all the transport contractors concerned to deposit the rice within March 20 and 27 at Sangaiprou godown.
The official order also mentioned names of MS WI Enterprises (Dimapur-Imphal) and MS Zenith Enterprises (Dimapur-Ukhrul) as transport contractors.
The order instructed the contractors to inform FCI authority if the trucks were stranded on the way and to relay the message to the nearest police and Army outpost for necessary security arrangement.
Meanwhile, Superfine rice which is meant for PDS are found being sold at Khwairamband Keithel openly.
A bag of 50 kg is sold at Rs 750 to Rs 800 in the market.
