Imphal, June 19 2019:
Guruaribam Ranjan Sharma was remanded to further police custody for investigation after he was arrested on charges of attempting to murder one Thongam Govind on June 16 at Bharmapur Aribam Leikai (near water supply).
During the course of the investigation, Guruaribam Rochana, younger sister of the accused, was also arrested for allegedly destroying the evidences and concealing the facts of the case.
The accused Guruaribam Ranjan Sharma alias Anjan alias Kon (39) s/o (L) Chandras Sharma, and his younger sister Guruaribam Rochana, of Bharmapur Guruaribam Leikai, were produced before JMIC Imphal East Court (in-charge of Chief Judicial Magistrate) along with a prayer for further 3 days remand and three days in police custody remand respectively.
During the proceeding, the IO submitted that on June 16, Thongam James, son of the victim Thongam Govind, lodged a complaint to Porompat PS stating that on the same day, at around 10.30 pm, his father was assaulted by Ranjan near the water supply with a knife and other deadly weapons without any reason and due to the assault, his father (the victim) was seriously injured on his abdomen and other parts of the body and had to be evacuated to Raj Medicity.
After committing the crime, Ranjan fled from the spot, he added.
On the basis of the complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused and he was arrested by a team of Porompat PS led by Sub Inspector N Gavaskar, from Singjamei Sapam Leikai.
The IO continued that during preliminary interrogation, Ranjan disclosed that he had committed the crime by using a nail cutter and accordingly the police seized the weapon.
However, upon further interrogation in police custody, the accused disclosed that he had assaulted the victim with a knife and not a nail cutter as he had earlier claimed and he also revealed that the knife had been concealed inside his cupboard/almirah which was kept in his bedroom.Accordingly, the police team proceeded to Ranjan's residence for recovering the knife but on reaching the place, it was learned that it had been kept concealed by the younger sister of the accused, Rochana and as such, she was also arrested.
During interrogation, Rochana revealed that after coming to know about the knife, she had kept the knife in the dustbin with intention to dispose it.
The IO submitted that the investigation has revealed that there is conspiracy hatched between the accused brother and his sister and at the same time, the accused Ranjan, is reluctant to disclose the details of the crime and as such, prayed for remanding the accused to 3 more days in police custody.
The IO also prayed for remanding Guruaribam Rochana to 3 days in police custody so as to recover the weapon used in the crime.
After hearing the submission and going through the case records, the Court granted the prayers of the IO and ordered them to be produced before the Court
on June 21 .
