Imphal, December 18 2014:
Dearth of toilet facilities at parking areas has posed not only a dirty scenario in public places, but also caused health hazards to commuters.
The passers-by on the roads feel ashamed at the dirty sight of people responding the call of nature here and there at roadside and parks.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is embarking upon a cleaned India under his innovative Swachh Bharat Mission, people of Manipur still have the habit of urinating at public places due to lack of toilet facilities.
The smell at Imphal city is quite awful as the city commuters urinate randomly defying any privacy.
People passing through these areas even develop vomiting tendencies at the smell.
Talking to this Daily, an official of Imphal Municipal Council said the provision of parking at Imphal city is done a committee comprising representatives of Manipur Police, Transports department, MAHUD and IMC.
However, the matter for construction of toilets at parking areas has not been raised by any of the members.
The Committee has so far given parking for vehicles at Statehood Square (MPP office and surrounding areas of Imphal Pologround), Indira Park, Wahengbam leikai, Kangla Park, Nagamapal and Uripok areas.
Auto parking at Statehood Square is the most congested area adjacent to the wall of BT park.
Sometimes, Commuters used to urinate at the wall of the Park.
Now, the four walls of the Imphal Pologround fencing have become a place of urination for the passers-by.
Even those who come to the Pologround for playing follow the same practice.
It is natural that out of 1000 people loitering in the city, 50 people urinate once an hour on the average.
There is no proper toilet for the males and females coming to the City.
On the other hand, the Sulabhs provide the toilet facility at payment of Rs 10 per head.
The state government needs to pay attention towards the unhealthy practice in the city arising out of the dearth of toilet facilities.
